Are you a proud multitasker?
In today's busy world many of us have to juggle multiple tasks/roles daily, necessitating constant fast switches of focus mentally from one thing to the other, or, even worse, trying to keep focus on more than one thing at a time.
While sometimes it is necessary to multitask, it is not something we should aim for as a constant mental state or consider an achievement to be proud of. Of course, there are people who absolutely thrive on high-pressure, constantly changing environments, but my observations and interactions with clients suggests that most of us do not fall into that category, we are just trying to keep up and keep it together!
Our minds are not designed to thrive in a multi-focus situation. For sure a chaotic mind is more likely to make a bad or unconsidered decision, but it goes much deeper than that. To understand the consequences of fast-paced living, we need to understand the different states of brain waves (see the picture above for an illustration). When we are mentally very busy on more than one thing our brain waves are in Gamma mode, an intense frequency that is good to access for high-focus single tasks, learning, problem solving and cognitive processing. However it is not good to constantly be in a Gamma state, as we are when our brain is overloaded with tasks. A constant Gamma state will eventually affect the chemistry of the brain and body, in turn leading to illness. You MUST come out of Gamma for brain, mind, body & chemistry health and balance.
It is ideal during waking to alternate between Gamma, Beta(alert, thinking, excitement) and Delta (physically and mentally relaxed).
So, how to manage when you can't drop any of your tasks?
-Try to focus on just the thing you are doing right now. Right now as I am writing this blog, I am not thinking about the next job on my list - I will focus on that when this is done. ONE tab open in your brain at a time will help.
-Find something that helps you to slow down your mind and do it daily if possible. Meditation is great, yoga, walking, breathwork or reading a great book.
-Cultivate a consciousness about how your mind is working. Notice if you have skipped ahead mentally from the task you are doing right now and bring your focus back (Mindfulness).
-If you need help to retrain your brain for single-tasking I invite you to book an appointment with me for neuro-facial reflexology. A beautiful, relaxing touch-therapy to help calm the mind, promote focus and slow down the brain waves to help you to reboot your mind and achieve inner quietness.
Based in Traditional Tibetan Neuro-Mapping and blended with modern neuroscience, this is a unique therapy which treats the whole mind/brain/body from the nerve pathways in the face and scalp. Created by neuro reflex therapy pioneer Lone Sorensen, I am delighted to bring this incredible therapy to Ireland.
